Meanwhile, secondary students in Third Year and Transition Year are invited to enter under the theme "The Past is My Place." Each has its own category. Kilkenny County Council Library Service Local Studies Department, Kilkenny Archaeological Society and Rothe House Trust have teamed up to bring the Fadó, Fadó: Sparking Memories competition back for 2026. The competition continues to foster a deep appreciation of local heritage among young people across the county. The organisers wish to thank the students, teachers and families for their commitment and enthusiasm, and the judges for their time and expertise. Through initiatives such as ‘Fadó Fadó: Sparking Memories’, a new generation is being inspired to explore, preserve and share Kilkenny’s rich history. At primary school level, the theme is " Stories from Lives of People in the Past", encouraging pupils to focus on people in their locality or even within their own family. There was one category for the primary level, covering Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Classes. What stood out most was the care and dedication shown by students in using original sources—from old newspapers and Ordnance Survey maps to family ledgers, photographs, the Schools’ Collection and even local headstones. Among the many fascinating discoveries were projects that brought history to life through personal and local stories. Meanwhile, secondary students in Third Year and Transition Year are invited to enter under the theme "The Past is My Place." Each has its own category. Second-level students also engaged with a wide range of local historical themes, exploring many of Kilkenny’s most significant sites and landscapes. Fadó Fadó: Sparking Memories’, prizegiving in the Mayfair Library on Tuesday 21st April@ 5pm Winners in each category will take home €100 voucher and a winner's cup, while runners-up will receive €75voucher and a medal. Additionally, projects in each category will be singled out as Highly Commended and awarded a special certificate. First and second prize-winners will also get a family pass to explore Rothe House in Kilkenny . Still Image A static visual representation.
