Title

Letter From Wentworth To The Mayor And Sheriffs 28 April 1637

Subject

Thomas Wentworth (1593-1641) was one of the most interesting statesmen of Britain and Ireland during the first half of the seventeenth century. He was an anti-puritan, a proponent of the need for domestic reform, and a firm believer in the authority of the state as represented in the person of the king. He was first elected to parliament in 1614, made lord president of the council of northern England in 1628 and in 1632 he was appointed lord deputy of Ireland. This letter is one of a group of notices sent to the mayor and citizens of Kilkenny during Wentworth's term of office.
