Patent of William IV, granting unto the Mayor and citizens of Kilkenny four additional fairs to be held on the 15th February, 6th May, 23rd September and 10th November each year, at St. John' s Green in the city and not elsewhere, together with a court of Pye Power during the fairs with full power and authority to have and retrieve reasonable toll in and for the said fairs and also all customs, privileges to the like courts of Pye Powerof right or custom belonging or appertaining. Yielding and paying yearly the sum of 13 shillings 4 pence sterling.
Description
A large piece of parchment with a portrait of William IV in the top left hand corner and the document is outlined with a floral scroll with rose and thistle. The crowned arms of Ireland, England, France and Scotland are visible. The text reads:
William the fourth by the grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, king, defender of the faith and so forth, to all whom these presents shall come, greeting. Whereas it appears unto us by an inquisition taken by virtue of our writ of ad quod damnum issued in pursuant of a warrant signed by our right trusty and entirely beloved cousin and councillor Richard Marquess Wellesley, knight of the most noble order of the garter, late our lieutenant general and general governer of Ireland given on the petition of the mayor and citizens of the city of Kilkenny that the granting to them of four additional fairs to be held on the fifteenth day of February, the sixth day of May, the twenty third day of September and the tenth day of November in each year, unless the same or any of them shall fall on Sunday and in that case on the day after, will be of no hurt, damage or prejudice to us or to any of our subjects who now hold fairs or markets in the neighborhood of the said city aforesaid.
