Description

A beautiful collection of thirty nine individual watercolour paintings created by Major-General Sir Hugh McCalmont which depict landscapes mainly around the Kashmir region of India and of Pakistan including Udaipur, Agra, Lucknow, Srinagar, Peshawar as well as the mountain ranges Tragbal Pass, Rampura pass and Kajinag. Although the album has '1912' printed on the front, it is not known what exact year these watercolour paintings were made as they are not dated. It is possible they were painted during the royal tour of India, where McCalmont served temporarily as commander of the Third Army Corps from December 1902 to March 1903.

The album includes a loosely inserted black and white photograph of Captain Montagu Locke Yeatherd in army uniform. Yeatherd was commissioned into the 7th Queen's Own Husssars, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 20 Apr 1907 and to Captain on 14 Mar 1912. He served with Major Hugh McCalmont who was given the colonelcy of the 7th Queen's Own Hussars in 1907, a position he held until his death in 1924.

The McCalmont family came from Abbeylands, White Abbey, County Antrim. In 1885 Major Hugh McCalmont married Lady Rose Elizabeth Bingham who was the daughter of Lord Clanmorris from Co. Mayo and a cousin of the dramatist Lady Gregory, patron of W B Yeats. Major General Sir Hugh McCalmont leased Mount Juliet house and demesne from the Earl of Carrick in the first decade of the 20th century. They purchased the house and property a short time later in 1914. Even before they purchased the demesne, they continued to maintain and improve the house and the grounds.
