Author's views and experiences of Covid 19
Description
An account of the resource

Dear any reader in the future...,that is a reader in the time when Covid 19 has been eradicated or become readily treatable or its vaccine has been developed

The very uncertainty encapsulated in the target audience is what we have all found so very disconcerting and unnerving about Covid 19. We do not know writing in June 2020 when we will be able to draw the line on the virus. When will we be able to say that we are post Covis 19??

As we are in a truly welcome manner gradually emerging from the vice of restriction I feel I should record these thoughts as soon as is possible. The mind has a curious habit when looking back of not making things seem as truly awful as they were

All things in life are relative I keep reiterating to my children time and again. Even in the worst of times we were never locked in,we were never actually timed on our exercise outings as in other jurisdictions both Far Eastern and mainland European

We were always able to orbit 2k and didn't need to share a dog to get another few minutes outside.

I also truly value that our house and garden are capacious and we all have our own independent internet access.

Still it has been , in many respects still is ,and into the future in some respects will remain, fairly grim.

I speak entirely personally but from the heart

To recount the worst and ongoing it is the lack of holidays and holiday experiences particularly abroad. We have always been fortunate to have long and fascinating holidays especially abroad. Many cities have we visited and many unusual countries experienced ,from Qatar to Madagascar, Delhi to Santiago both de Chile and de Compostella.

Our daughter is teaching for a year in the Bahamas..we were to have visited her this summer; my son and I had planned a night in Barcelona to eat in its recently opened branch of our Irish favourite diner..BUNSEN. Thinking that we will achieve either of these dreams is unrealistic

Not only will we not visit our daughter in the Bahamas but we cannot plan with total certainty any encounter with our London based son or the other son who is simply in Dublin..so near and yet so far.

For our youngest whose wanderlust tops any other, life has been very hard. Absented from peer company, worked very hard in school he has no cheering overseas travel prospects

My third level teaching is modest in the extreme but having to move on line for a few weeks at the end of the semester has been disorientating and humiliating given my lack of any expertise. The uncertainty of next semester remains a constant shadow.

To turn to the personal positives...long ie 20k Saturday walks with my usually too busy spouse orbiting ingeniously to make the most of the imposed limits, For 14 or so years I have regularly walked Kilkenny city yet there were still surprises on foot!! Following four hours of walking no indulgence in wine or icecream or choc has seemed. excessive.

Rarely given all the surrounding stress could treating oneself not be justified.

Only occasionally dining out normally, takeaways from the gamut of Kilkenny restaurants offering this service have risen to a very pleasant double figures over past weeks

Meal preparation has enhanced as has the amount of time spent lingering over culinary delights. Takeaway coffee has achieved a status well beyond its worth

For the sake of my bone health I have for a decade been a reluctant gym goer. I am in no hurry for these facilities to reopen. The reopening of the all time favourite Kilkenny city icecream shop has had a legendary impact on morale pocket and waistline

The excitement of 2k rose to 5k and then there was that exhilarating unexpected jump from 5k to county boundary

The exhilaration intensifies at the prospect of the accelerated time line allowing us country wide travel this very month rather than waiting til late July

We live in hope of trips to Dublin to visit our son and to our holiday house in West Cork

I could go on and on but will desist!!

These reflections are not only personal but also self indulgent. I dont wish the passage of time to cast an unrealistically rosy glow on what we have all been required to endure.

May we all though look forward in hope!!!

Be brave wise and strong in your time!

Surviving Coronavirus in Spain

Cathy Hogan

May 11, 2020

TWO MONTHS OF LIFE IN LOCKDOWN

This Friday, May 15th, marks two months of strict lockdown in Spain. We celebrate each small lifting of restrictions but know that more lives are put at risk with every step.

From the end of March I starting seeing the hashtag #lovinglockdown but I’ve never used it, feeling guilty for being happy despite the pandemic. The truth is I’m loving life, as I’ve always done – not life in lockdown per se, therefore I think it would be misleading for me to use that hashtag. Sometimes I even feel guilty for sharing positivity when so many are in mourning or barely surviving mentally or financially. But as an Irish Catholic, I may be genetically predisposed to feelings of guilt.

People who have spent their adult lives harbouring positive relationships, rewarding work, and healthy and happy lifestyles tend to survive and, dare I say it, thrive during testing times such as these. Resilience is the key and hopefully many have learned to play the long game. The rest of the population is busy Googling 'When will the pubs open' - the second most Googled question in Ireland of late.

ONLY FOR LOCKDOWN I WOULDN’T HAVE...

Searching for and spreading positivity is essential these days and I was wondering about the things that, only for lockdown I wouldn’t have done. Like, tasting our own home-grown fruit and vegetables, and buying a brood of hens. I reconnected with some international friends who have since become part of my circle of strong, supportive people. I also wouldn’t have seen sides of some friends and family that have come to the fore: resourcefulness, humour, and an appreciation for the important things in life.

I put the question to my friends and here is what some of them shared with me:

SCOTT: ‘I’ve always been good in the kitchen but now I enjoy being forced to cook every evening since there is no other option available here in New Zealand.’

ROSEY: ‘I have been watching plays regularly on Zoom with a friend that I used to go the theatre with and I literally live for those calls. I also got virtual acting coaching and that was so much more diagnostic than the usual sessions. I spend much more time walking with my dog, and I learned how to use a sewing machine which I have wanted to do for an age.’

AILISH: ‘Only for lockdown I wouldn't have appreciated the frontline workers saving lives.’

DYMPHNA: ‘We’ve really bonded as a family, and we have adopted some nice new habits, such as our eleven o’clock coffee break on the patio where mobiles are banned. We’ve taken up tennis on the front drive and we also built and planted a huge polytunnel - I hadn’t envisioned us getting around to that until our retirement in fifteen or twenty years’ time!’

BREDA: ‘I planted a large new flower bed and bought a sustainably made picnic bench for my back garden. It was produced in Co Offaly from 6,000 recycled plastic bottles.’

LIAM: ‘Only for lockdown I wouldn’t have had the interest to doubt politicians and their informed decision-making. I had the time to think and wonder why in Ireland it is taking so long to form a Government. If the pandemic is so scary and urgent, and it is, why isn’t a new government rushing to take over. Did we elect only an opposition?’

JOHN: ‘I wouldn't have developed a fitness regime with my daughters. They have free time from work and university now and every morning we put the lead on the dog and clock up over 10,000 steps on our Fitbits. As a family, it's brought us closer together.’

SARAH: ‘Only for lockdown I wouldn’t be organising our second Beours Digital Open Mic Night to raise funds for the Sexual Violence Centre Cork this weekend. And I wouldn’t have dug up that huge creeper that has been choking the garden for the last two years.’

JITKA: ‘I’ve been reminded of how great the people I have around me are - I feel blessed! And I’ve had the chance to spend so much quality time with my family. I also got around to spring cleaning. I realised that we took for granted the endless supply goods, our healthcare workers, teachers, hairdressers, local shops etc. It has also been great to see how the creative half of the Czech Republic took out their sewing machines and made masks and scrubs for those who needed it. Donating is huge here now - from coffee and goodies for medical stuff, to supporting local producers and shops. Or just giving a bar of chocolate to our postal service lady.’

ALAN: Only for lockdown, I wouldn’t have started a cooking blog.

SABINE: I wouldn’t have shone a torch into certain corners of my mind, and I’m glad I did. It’s not all pretty but I’m figuring out what parts of me that I like and what parts need work.

TRISH: Without lockdown I wouldn’t have been able to focus on writing my thesis.

MARIA: I recently convened a session at the European Geophysical Union meeting from my music room at home. The annual event usually takes place in Vienna and it’s the largest meeting of geo scientists in Europe. About twenty thousand normally travel to share their findings, learn from each other, network and create new collaborative projects in hundreds of environmental disciplines. For years I thought that these large conferences needed to move online for the most part; the cost to the environment, as well as financially to our agencies is huge. This year, instead of cancelling it the organisers switched to the internet. Now topical sessions, like mine on seabed mapping was facilitated via an online platform. Co-convenes and I introduced and questioned each author and their work is accessible for the rest of the month.

‘It worked out so well that all conveners, speakers and the audience were praising the new system. Moving to an online platform would never have happened if not for the pandemic, not even for environmental scientists who are responsible for monitoring & educating the public on global warming!

‘This pandemic also made it possible for me to attend. Being currently out of work I would never have made it to Vienna to carry out the convening, keep up with the latest research and interact with my research colleagues.

The return to the old way of life is not an option for many so here’s hoping that our ‘new normal’ will be as half as good as it can and aught to be.

Now, to get going on that list of ‘Things to do before lockdown ends.’

End

Her Mother and Father welcoming her with outstretched arms and warm embrace, holding her close and whispering words of boundless Parental Love.

We watched and waited for this miracle to unfold, knowing we could not hold or touch or smell that special smell that new Life brings.

She is perfect. She is unique. She is beautiful.

Disturbance

The storm came angry with wind and rain

Clouds scudding across the sky in pain

Snowdrops bowed their heads in submission

Daffodils waved about keeping their position

Trees dipped their branches in a most alarming way

Dancing to and fro with creaking sounds as they sway

Visible signs of damage, all around our land

A different storm. A stranger comes with an invisible hand

Stealthily creeping up on an unsuspecting population

Bringing fear, mental anguish, sickness and suffocation

We will fight this tempest. Stand tall like the oak tree

Our land and people will someday be totally free

Nobody wants to live their life in total isolation

Darkness has fallen no words to describe desolation

Be brave and show courage. Shine a light with faith and hope

Love and kindness gives us all, the strength to cope

How the arrival of Covid 19 unexpectedly assisted the slowing of global warming

A Voice in the Wilderness

The Earth was warming, much too fast.

We had to cool it down.

But, rich men with expensive tastes said
Nothing could be done. And that was that.

But they told us they would try.

So, dressed to kill, they shared their skill,

they racked their brains

and brought their shiny flow charts up to date.

The data said the temperature was spiralling to ‘God knows where’.

So, nothing could be done. And that was that.

Governments said it might be solved.

So they checked their balance sheets.

And yes, they all agreed:

the mercury must fall,

the earth must cool.

But the dollar must survive, and economies must grow.

So, nothing could be done. And that was that.

Then a young voice spoke.

She told us that the world would have to rest.

We only had one planet. Just one Earth.

One place that we called home.

And home was getting hot.

The temperature must fall.

But those in power said business must survive and the dollar must be saved.

So, nothing could be done. And that was that.

We knew the skies were crowded with metal birds of prey.

And clouds gave way to vapour trails

from planes which owned the space where light came through

and carbon in abundance ruled the land.
And the young voice of reason spoke again and said

‘reclaim the earth and leave the skies in peace’.

But reason was not heard.

So nothing could be done. And that was that.

Then quietly from the East something virulent and unseen

slid silently to our shores and left destruction in its wake.

Then the dead piled up and the rushing stopped.

The factories closed and the earth slowed down.

And vapour furrows in the skies gave way to cumulus and cirrus clouds

which told us that fair weather was to come.

The birds reclaimed their space and the dollar hid its face.
Then the streams ran clear and pure,

the planet took its rest and the meek reclaimed the earth.

So, there was no more to be done.
And that was that.

How Covid affected our appreciation of everyday living.
Description

A Joy Filled Life

Something that we cannot see has slowed us for a while,

It’s helping us to stop and contemplate

The challenge of our lives on pause; the value of a smile:

Right now we simply have to stop and wait.

Why did I take for granted all the simple things of life,

All the little things I did from day to day?

Why did I never notice all the joy I could derive

From the people I encountered on my way?

It’s just that life got busy and I never took the time

To appreciate the treasures close at hand,

Like the pleasure of a greeting or to feel your hand in mine,

Or to do the things that I had always planned.

For now with social distancing we keep ourselves at bay

From our families and friends who mean so much.

It goes against our way of life to have to live this way

And lose the comfort of a human touch.

But we will dance and sing again,

We know that we can bring again

The passion to begin again

The ordinary simple things in life.
