Letter written by Robert Southwell on behalf of King William III and received by the Corporation of Kilkenny assuming command of the City and County following the defeat of Jacobite forces. This letter requests the appointment of a Williamite (Protestant) Mayor and aldermen in the corporation, thereby removing all trace of the Jacobite regime in local government.
Description
A letter from King William III to the Corporation of Kilkenny re-asserting Williamite (Protestant) command of the county following the defeat of the Jacobite forces in Ireland at the Battle of the Boyne. This was received by the Corporation at the Royal Camp based in Bennettsbridge on July 19th 1690.
The text reads:

Upon application made unto us by the protestant aldermen of our city of Kilkenny who were displaced by the late king, praying that they might be authorized and made capable to serve us in the government of the said citty and in all things appertaining thereunto and requesting that John Baxter, esquire, might be mayor of our said citty, and Robert Dixon esquire, recorder thereof, and Agmundisham Cuff, Josias Haydock, Francis Rowlidge, William Kimberly, Michael Badge, Richard Connell, John Pape, Thomas Cooksye and Joseph Helsham to be aldermen, and John Hamilton and Thomas date to be sheriffs of the same. Our will and pleasure is and we doe hereby constitute and appoint for the peace and present government of our said citty, and until further consideration may be taken therein, that the said John Baxter be mayor of our said citty of Kilkenny, and that the said Robert Dixon be recorder thereof, and that the said Agmundisham Cuff, Josias Haydock, Francis Rowlidge, William Kimberly, Michael Badge, Richard Conell, John Pape, Thomas Cooksye, and Joseph Helsham be aldermen, and John Hamilton and Thomas Date to be sheriffs of the same, to exercise and enjoy all the antient privileges and jurisdictions of their charters whereof they were illegally deprived and particularly to oversee the markets, and regulate the prices of things which were now exorbitant. That all things in the said citty and libertyes may be managed in good order and as to justice and good government shall appertaine.
Given at our royal camp at Benetsbridge, this 19th day of July 1690, in the second year of our regime.
