Description
This McCalmont family scrapbook reflects the changing post war period where the family continued to develop Mount Juliet as a world leading horse stud. There are many newspaper cuttings and photographs which show the continued success of the estate's horses in race meets across the UK and Ireland. There is also an in-depth profile of the prizewinning horse, The Tetrarch from 'The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News' (Jan. 1920) which includes a photograph of a sign on the estate that reads: 'Visitors wishing to see The Tetrarch are welcome between 4pm and 5pm'. This reflects the popularity and high regard of the horse. Although the horse had been retired from racing at this stage, it's popularity as a sire is well documented with detailed lists recording the names of foals sired by the horse from the years 1919 to 1925. Horse racing continues to be a popular feature in the lives of the McCalmont family during these years, there are several photographs and cuttings from national newspapers which show the family attending meets in a variety of places including the Curragh, Phoenix Park, Newmarket and Aintree.
Following Dermot's decommission from the army in 1919, he settles well into family life with Lady Helen Coynham at Mount Juliet. Their son, Victor, arrives in April 16th, 1919 and the family continue to develop their interests in local sporting life, with Dermot serving as the Grand Master of the Kilkenny Hunt for many years. Their interest in hunting results in the development of new kennels at the estate under the supervision of Mr. Edward Hoggarth. The family help to create a sense of community in the area by encouraging local farmers to become actively involved in the hunt, thereby making the Kilkenny Hunt one of the best in Ireland. They also provide gainful employment to local men who are brought in to become dog walkers for the fox hounds kept in kennels on the estate. During these years, the Kilkenny Hunt Puppy Show becomes a regular feature at Mount Juliet, proving to be a popular event attended by both locals and visitors.
Sir Hugh McCalmont's death in May 1924 is widely reported in the press with many newspaper cuttings providing detailed obituaries about his life and career. Although his extensive military career took him to many places across the world, he is "best remembered as a horseman" in these tributes. The newspapers report how two memorial services were held for him - in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin and in St. George's Church in London with Rose keeping several handwritten notes of condolences from various sporting organisations offering their sympathies.
Some pages of this scrapbook give us insight into Rose's holidays overseas. She gives a detailed account of one holiday in Florida in April 1920 with her sister, Ms. Barry, where they go fishing in the Keys and provides some materials from her trip on board the RMS Mauretania including a dinner menu. There are also photographs and handwritten accounts from her trip to the Dolomites in Italy in August 1930.
One unfortunate incident that is documented in this scrapbook is the jewellery theft which occurred at Mount Juliet in April, 1926, when Dermot and Lady Helen are away at the Carlow Races. Newspaper cuttings report the theft of £20,000 worth of jewellery belonging to the couple.
