Description
This scrapbook contains various materials relating to the McCalmont Family from the period 1915 to 1919. It gives an insight into Dermot's military service in East Africa during World War 1 where he served as Military Secretary to General H. Smith Dorrien. From 1915 to 1918 he served in Africa as part of the East African Expeditionary Force and he was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. Rose kept a detailed account of Dermot's time spent in Africa, which is evident in the large collection of telegrams, correspondence, photographs and newspaper cuttings in this scrapbook. Dermot sent regular telegrams to his parents during this time to let them know that he received their letters and that all was well. Rose kept a comprehensive archive of newspaper cuttings from various periodicals detailing the actions of the East Africa Expedition and their advances against the German troops. The scrapbook also includes letters from the war office giving Dermot his orders to return home in February 1918.
In this scrapbook, there is also reference to Rose's achievements in helping the war effort. This includes her work in setting up and running a military hospital for French soldiers at Fécamp in France where she also worked as a nurse. She mentions publication of her book, 'Memoirs of the Binghams' as featured in an article from ‘The Graphic’ periodical in December 1915.
While many of the contents in this scrapbook prominently feature the family's involvement in World War 1 overseas, there is also many references to life in Ireland and Mount Juliet at this time. Rose compiles a collection of articles from various periodicals featuring the events of the 1916 Rising in Dublin, with several photographs showing the destruction to Dublin City in the aftermath of the rebellion.
The family's keen interest in horses continues steadfast at this time. Rose keeps a detailed account of the horses kept on the estate and there are several photographs which show the initial construction of Ballylinch Stud in 1914.
She also keeps accounts of race meets across the UK and Ireland. There are several newspaper cuttings which mention their prize-winning horses the 'Tetrarch' and 'Roi d'Ecosse'.
The final section of this scrapbook documents Dermot's return to Ireland and his marriage to Lady Helen Coynnham on June 3rd, 1918 in Slane, Co. Meath. Although a joyous occasion for both families, the wedding was a more subdued affair due to the political climate at the time. Newspaper articles mention that there were no invites sent out and there were no bridesmaids which would have been unusual for society weddings at that time.
