8. Scrapbook of newspaper clippings and assorted ephemera (principally related to horse racing) - June 1909 to April 1911
Subject
Family Scrapbook donated to Kilkenny County Council Library Services by Harry McCalmont.
Description
Contents of this scrapbook include various materials including letters, photographs, telegrams, handwritten notes, racing programmes, etc. Many of the newspaper clippings have been meticulously cut and underlined which mention the activities of the McCalmont family, particularly those of Dermot and his achievements as a jockey at race meets in the UK and Ireland.
Dermot’s ‘Coming of Age’ Ball in April 1908 is well documented in the press with Lady Rose keeping newspaper cuttings from the evening’s events, described by one publication as ‘the most brilliant entertainment that has taken place in the county for many years’. A wide range of guests attended the ball at Mount Juliet including Lady Rose’s brother, Lord Clanmorris, and it is reported that festivities went on until 5am in the morning.
There are several newspaper cuttings which detail Dermot's successful career in horse racing with several photographs of Lady Helen in attendance at various race meets. There are several photographs taken of Dermot McCalmont whilst competing in races with handwritten descriptions on the back. Dermot is lauded for his success as a ‘steeplechase rider’ at several race meets, including for his win at Kempton Park in March 1909, where he placed first on the horse, ‘Johnstown Lad’. Dermot also gained success at Ascot with his horse, ‘Seaforth’ whom he purchased in 1909 from Marchioness Conynham of Slane Castle, Co. Meath (his future mother-in-law). Dermot’s sends regular telegrams to his family at Mount Juliet to let them know where he placed in race meets.
There is a profile of Hugh McCalmont from 'The World' newspaper (dated June 15th 1909) which provides an in-depth account of Hugh's life as soldier, politician and sportsman. Praising his career in the British army, it goes on to describe Sir Hugh as having ‘seen more service than anyone of his standing in the army’. It also references the vast improvements that Sir Hugh and Lady Rose undertook since taking on the lease at Mount Juliet House and grounds.
