Description
Various Newspaper Cuttings ranging from 1867-1891, detailing horse racing exploits of Hugh McCalmont as both a jockey and owner, amateur theatric performances of James Martin McCalmont and the military career of Hugh McCalmont, including his deployment to the Russo-Turkish War, the Anglo-Egyptian War, the South African War and the Nile Expedition. There is also mention of Hugh McCalmont and Lady Rose McCalmonts marriage in the latter stages of the scrapbook. The last couple of pages detail Hugh McCalmonts run for election in East Belfast in 1895.
This scrapbook illustrates clearly Lady Rose McCalmont's meticulous collection of newspaper clippings detailing McCalmont family exploits. A large portion of this collection is given to the amateur theatric performances of James Martin McCalmont (1847-1913), who was Hugh McCalmonts younger brother and Robert Jasper Martin (1846–1905) who was Hugh and James' uncle and half brother to their mother Emily Anne McCalmont.
It's clear from the account given in newspapers that RJ Martin was an accomplished comic writer, songwriter and actor with several of his plays detailed in the newspaper clippings included.
It's also clear that James Martin McCalmont was an accomplished comic actor, having appeared in many performances, beginning as a young man when he would have been about 20 in 1867, to the 1880's when he would have been in his 40's.
We can see accounts of both men's performances in a variety of locations, from Larne, Antrim to the Rotunda (now Ambassador) and Gaiety Theatre's, Dublin.
We also see detailed accounts of Hugh McCalmont's horse racing exploits, participating in Military horse races across Ireland. As a young man, Hugh appears to have been an accomplished Jockey, winning many races and later in life as an owner, owning several winning horses.
A large portion of this scrapbook is given towards accounts of Hugh McCalmont's military career, charting his rise from Captain to Colonel as he was in the last entry dates 1891.
We can see articles detailing Hugh's service in the Russo-Turkish War, the Anglo-Egyptian War, the South African War and the Nile Expedition.
