<text>Kilkenny’s social and cultural history from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries was dominated both politically, visually, socially and cultural by the Big Houses, their estates and the landed families that resided in them. One of the most well-known of these houses is Mount Juliet, now internationally famous as a top golf resort and venue for many prestigious tournaments. But Mount Juliet had quite a different life prior to its purchase as a resort.
The House came into the possession of the McCalmont Family in 1909. It remained in their possession for most of the 20th Century. The scrapbooks in question, were created by Lady Rose McCalmont dating from circa 1909 to the late 1930’s and contain not just a family archive, but general Irish History, topics include, the First world War, 1916 Rebellion, The War of Independence and the Civil War. It covers the family’s involvement in Imperial service in East Africa during the First World War. Big House culture is covered by the family’s involvement with horses and the running of the Estate and the employment and livelihoods it generated and supported. The assets consist of letters, newspaper clippings, photograph and telegrams.
This was a period of great change in Ireland and also internationally and the scrapbooks illustrate this. At the same time the continuity of the culture and life of the Big House also strongly features. Thus, the contrasting themes of continuity and change, a feature of modern life also feature here in a highly visual manner.

<text>This photo album gives us a sense of Lady Helen McCalmont's life before her marriage to Major Dermot McCalmont in 1918. Lady Helen was born Lady Barbara Helen Conyngham in 1893, married Major Dermot in 1918 and died in 1938, having given birth to one son, Victor. It includes photo's of Helen as a young woman from 1910 & 1911 when Helen would have been between 17 & 18 years old. The album includes photos from Helen's time in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she studied prior to her debut. They show various aspects of her life at the time, from trips with friends to ski trips and trips to lake Geneva. From this time there are also some very interesting pictures of a costume ball Helen and her friends attended.
The middle of the album features pictures of Helen's life when she returned to Ireland, showing the surrounds of the family estate at Slane Castle and the beginnings of her life long love of horse training, hunting & dogs.

We can clearly see from the album that Helen put great importance on family, as we can see she has proudly included pictures of her niece Evelyn, who was daughter of her sister Lady Hersey Constance Evelyn Conyngham.

The latter stages of the album feature newspaper clippings detailing her sister Lady Edina Dorothy Hope Conyngham to Sir Thomas Ainsworth in 1911 at Slane Castle, Co.Meath.
Lady Helen would have been about 18 years old at this time and served as bridesmaid to her sister at the wedding. We can speculate with reasonable cause that Lady Helen was quite proud of this moment owing to the numerous newspaper articles and clippings she chose to include in this album.</text>
